In June 2013, two students from the M.Sc programme “Management and Economics of Innovation” at Chalmers University of Technology presented their M.Sc thesis focusing on the fetal monitoring industry and STAN in particular. Their research study analyzes diffusion of STAN in Europe and utilizes the most cutting-edge theory and research methods at hand within the discipline of industrial management on the conditions for diffusion. During the study over 25 interviews were conducted with clinical professionals in 4 European countries, investigating …

Meta-Analysis shows significant improvements with ST-analysis
The March 2013 American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG) included a publication by Schuit et al. entitled “Effectiveness of electronic fetal monitoring with additional ST analysis in vertex singleton pregnancies at >36 weeks of gestation: an individual participant data meta-analysis (MA).” Since the publication of the AJOG article, there have been two Letters to Editor, one from Prof. Rosen and a response from the authors, regarding issues with this particular MA. We encourage you to read these letters (on-line) …

The objective of this meta-analysis was to investigate the additional effect of ST Analysis as an adjunct to electronic fetal monitoring. In order to overcome the shortcomings of conventional meta-analysis that uses aggregated data, the present analysis used individual participant data to allow for a more thorough investigation by taking all information into account, including accounting for missing data.
Only four of the five published randomised controlled trials (RCT) were included in the analysis. The first RCT by Westgate …

Interview with Jörg Kessler, MD PhD, Department of Ob/Gyn, Haukeland University Hospital Bergen.
You have used ST Analysis at your department since 2004. What were your experiences from when you first introduced the method?
When we made the decision to implement ST Analysis, we were very much focused on education and training. Before going live with the method all 160 midwifes and doctors went through theoretical and practical education and became certified Stan users. Right from the start regular sessions for retrospective case discussions have been part of a continuous learning process.

You were one of the very first centres that started to use Stan and ST Analysis.
Yes, Professor Risto Erkkola, now retired since two years, was a pioneer. We got our first Stan device already around 1995, before the analysis of the waveform was automatic and before the Stan Guidelines were formalized.
Then in 2000 you joined the study sponsored by the European Union?
We got our first two Stan S21 devices and it was a great relief to have …
Strict adherence to Stan Guidelines leads to improved outcome
In this sub-analysis of the Dutch randomised trial it is shown that cases with adverse outcome in the index group (CTG+ST analysis) could have been avoided by stricter adherence to Stan guidelines. Improved CTG interpretation and timing of fetal blood sampling could have led to better outcomes in the control group.
